ASBURY PLACE

About Asbury Place
Asbury Place, located on the beautiful Asbury campus, is a specially designed, licensed personal care facility. It is a free standing, 42-bed residence, built and dedicated exclusively to the care of individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer's Disease and other memory related disorders.

Environment/Philosophy
Asbury Place's unique environment and commitment to a social model makes it a leader in providing care for residents and families in southwestern Pennsylvania. In most stages of Alzheimer's, people do not suffer physical debilitation, therefore medical intervention is not always a necessity. By addressing the social needs of people with Alzheimer's, residents can maintain their individuality and independence as much as possible.

Residents of Asbury Place can enter the large outdoor secured garden with strolling paths to enjoy fresh air and exercise which are so important to health and comfort.

Caregiver Intervention Program
During the first six months of residency, Asbury's Caregiver Intervention Program provides an open system of communication and support for the primary family caregiver in order to help the transition of their loved one from home to Asbury Place. Most families choose to continue with the ongoing support of this program. This program was presented to the National Alzheimer's Disease Educational Conference. The program has also been evaluated by the Health Services Research Unit of the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh.

The Support Group at Asbury Place meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 2-3:00 p.m. This support group is open to the community, and day care is available for family members who want to attend.

Activities
The activity program is designed to help the residents maintain the highest level of cognition and independence for as long as possible. The program includes intergenerational activities, i.e. the Grandfriends program, pet therapy, music, reminiscing, daily acts of living, and weekly ecumenical spiritual hours.

Training
Resident care givers are trained in dementia care, and in-service staff meetings offer new information and continued training in caring for those with Alzheimer's Disease and other memory-related disorders.
