Giving Opportunities
Asbury Foundation has been the fundraising subsidiary of Asbury's parent organization, United Methodist Services for the Aging, since 1990. During that time, monies have been raised:
- to provide benevolent care to those residents who can no longer pay for the full cost of their care;
- for the building of Asbury Place, an assisted living facility for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related memory disorders; and
- to renovate the Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
just to name a few. Various appeals are sent out to our friends and families throughout the year:
- the Memorial Garden appeal, which allows the donors to inscribe a flower in memory or in honor of a loved one;
- the Frances Hamilton society appeal, our annual membership drive which benefits benevolent care; and
- the Caring Angel Christmas appeal, which allows the donor to inscribe an angel in memory or in honor of a loved one.
The "Keeping the Faith" dinners originated with Jim O'Brien, author of the "Pittsburgh Proud" series and a local columnist, whose mother, Mary O'Brien, lived at Asbury Heights until her death in early 2003. The proceeds from the dinners benefit the Benevolent Care Fund. In four years, these events have raised over $170,000, thanks to Mr. O'Brien and such speakers as Tunch Ilkin, Chuck Tanner, Rocky Bleier and Andy Russell.
Asbury Heights has a proud tradition of never asking a resident to leave because of diminished funds. All of the appeals listed above support the Benevolent Care Fund. As the numbers and the needs of our area's older adults grow, so does the need for financial help for many of our residents. Currently, we are providing over $800,000 in benevolent care annually.
