Spring Lane Frequently Asked Questions
What is assisted living?
Assisted Living is a supportive living arrangement in which residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible with the availability of assistance when necessary. Housing, meals and support services including, but not limited to, bathing, dressing, dietary and medication management, housekeeping, and activities are provided.
Do you have nurses on staff?
Yes. We have licensed nursing staff on the premises 24 hours per day.
Can I continue to be seen by my own doctor(s)?
Yes. You are welcome to continue to see your current physician(s) at his/her office, or your physician may visit you at Spring Lane with the prior approval of the Medical Director). You also have the opportunity to be seen by the attending physicians at the Asbury Heights Health & Wellness Center.
What other medical services to you provide?
We have a board-certified, fellowship-trained geriatrician serving as Medical Director and additional attending physicians. Also, we have available on campus the following medical specialists:
- Dentists
- Ophthalmologists
- Opticians
- Physiatrist
- Podiatrists
- Audiologists
- Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists
What hospital will I have to use?
You can go to the hospital of your choice (where your physician practices). However, in a critical situation, it may be necessary to take you to St. Clair Hospital, which is the nearest facility for emergency treatment.
Do I have to use your pharmacy?
No. You can use a pharmacy of your choice providing you follow the guidelines established by the Department of Public Welfare who provided the license for Spring Lane. If you need an emergency medication, you may use our pharmacy services.
Does your pharmacy accept my insurance program?
Our pharmacy accepts most major prescription plans. If there is a doubt, we would be happy to call the pharmacy to verify coverage.
How will I be billed?
You will be billed monthly for your daily rent for the upcoming month. Ancillary charges, such as styling salon services, guest meals and laundry, etc. for the previous month will be included on your monthly statement.
What happens when my money runs out?
Asbury Heights is a faith based, not for profit, continuing care retirement community. There is a benevolent care fund that will provide for those who have depleted their resources over the extended period of their residency and can no longer pay full charges for their care and accommodations. Once you are admitted to Asbury, we would never ask you to leave when your assets are depleted.
What kind of rooms do you have?
We have private rooms with a shared or a private bath available.
Do you provide the furnishings?
Most residents prefer to bring their furniture and personal items from home, but we would be happy to provide you with a bed, dresser and mirror, nightstand and lamp, and a comfortable chair.
Can I go out overnight with friends and family?
You are most welcome to go away with family and friends, as you are able. There is no curfew. We ask that you inform the nursing staff when you will be away in order for them to prepare your medications to take with you.
What are the visiting hours?
Visiting hours are 24 hours a day. This is your home. Family and friends are welcome to visit at any time. Please have your family and friends sign in at the Front Desk in the Guest Registry. Visitor badges are kept in a basket by the registries for your guests to wear.
Can my guest have meals with me in the dining room?
Your guests are welcome to have meals in our Dining Room. We would appreciate 24-hour advance notice, but we will do our best to accommodate guests if they arrive unexpectedly. The extra charge for the meals can be added to your monthly statement.
Do you have a beauty shop?
Asbury Heights has a styling salon for your convenience. Manicures and pedicures are available by appointment only. Your monthly statement will reflect these charges.
Will I be able to follow the special diet my physician has ordered?
Our Dining Services Department is prepared to enable you to follow any special diet your physician has ordered. There is a Registered Dietician available for consultation with you and your family regarding your dietary needs. Special diet menus are available upon request.
What happens if I'm too ill to get to the dining room for a meal?
Tray service is available, for up to three (3) days at no extra charge, to get you through a very short-term illness, such as a bout of the flu.
How often will I get help with bathing per week?
Staff will assist you with showers two times per week. You are welcome to bathe independently as often as you like if you are safely able to accomplish this task.
Is there any additional charge for personal laundry service?
Personal laundry is not included in the base rate. However, there are washers and dryers available for your use, free of charge (you provide laundry detergent/fabric softener). Family members and/or friends are welcome to do your laundry at Asbury Heights or they may take it home. We can provide laundry service at an additional charge, and information for dry cleaning is available at the front desk.
What happens if I need to be in a wheelchair?
As long as you can independently get around in your wheelchair, you will be able to stay at Spring Lane.
Will I have to leave Spring Lane if I become incontinent?
We are prepared to assist in the management of incontinence issues. We will arrange a transition to Asbury Health Center if the incontinent condition becomes unmanageable.
Can I go to Asbury Health Center when I need it?
Yes. Asbury offers a continuum of care to meet your needs as your health condition changes. From independent living, to assisted living, to skilled nursing care, you can continue to make Asbury your home.
What if there is no bed available at the Asbury Health Center?
If it is an emergency that threatens your safety or wellbeing, we will help to arrange a transfer for a temporary stay in another facility close by until a bed is available at Asbury Health Center. In non-emergency situations, Asbury’s Case Management Team regularly monitors the status of each resident and strives to anticipate and prepare for moves. As conditions arise, we will lay the groundwork for smooth transitions.
Do you have to be a Methodist to come to Spring Lane?
No. United Methodist Services for the Aging, which operates Asbury Heights and Spring Lane, is owned by the Western Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church. However, Asbury welcomes everyone and does not discriminate on the basis of religion, sex, race, age or national origin.
What are some examples of extra charges that are not included in the base rate?
Costs for medication, doctor visits, medical supplies, incontinence supplies, Beauty Shop services, guest meals, personal laundry and escort services are some extra charges you may see on your monthly statement.
Do you provide transportation?
Asbury provides van transportation for pre-scheduled medical appointments and outings. Other transportation options include: (1) Access program through Allegheny County; and (2) St .Clair Hospital’s courtesy van (free of charge for those who have medical appointments at St. Clair Hospital or at St. Clair Medical Professional Building).
What is the admission process?
After you have made the decision to make Spring Lane your new home, we would ask that you submit an application for review and approval. The next step would be to see your physician for an admission physical and assessment. After these steps have been completed and you have been approved for admission, you can begin to plan which of your personal items and furniture you will be bringing to your room at Spring Lane. You will also have a meeting with the Administrator to sign the appropriate documents, such as the Resident Agreement.
